Dr. Quinten Black

Quinten Black, M.D., better known as "Dr. Q" by patients and co-workers, is dedicated to providing his patients with undivided attention at consultation time, accurate and easy to understand recommendations, continuing availability for further questions and discussion, feedback as to the progress of treatment, and offering the most effective next generation treatment modalities.

Dr. Black received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry in California, then attended Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana and was awarded his medical degree in 1998. He then completed his residency training in Radiation Oncology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. After completing residency, Dr. Black joined 21st Century Oncology and began serving patients in western North Carolina. Dr. Black is board certified in Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Black specializes in high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy, a next generation form of implant therapy utilized in prostate, breast, head and neck, and gynecologic malignancy. He also has particular experience with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) as well as stereotactic radiosurgery, both forms of cutting edge external beam radiation therapy.

Dr. Black has presented his research at multiple institutional, state, and national scientific meetings. While in residency, Dr. Black developed an algorithm to allow accurate radiotherapy targeting of tumors with PET (positron emission tomography) scanning. This algorithm was derived from extensive laboratory research using high precision calibration experiments. Dr. Black's hope is that by integrating PET scans accurately into radiotherapy treatment planning, that tumor volumes will be more accurately targeted, perhaps allowing smaller, more precise, and more intense radiation dose distributions.

Dr. Black has been married to his wonderful wife Francie for 14 years and has 3 children. He is actively involved in his local church, enjoys the outdoors, cycling, roller hockey, and has a special interest in technology. Dr. Black's mission is to "strive to become a better servant to my family, patients, and community".
