Dr.
Joseph J. Bonanno came to the Fort Walton Beach area
in December of 1987, where he joined the Okaloosa Community
Radiation Therapy Cancer Treatment Center.
He was raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and attended undergraduate
school at Louisiana State University. After completing
medical school in 1965, at Louisiana State University Medical
Center in New Orleans, he moved to New Jersey where he
successfully completed his internship.
He then moved to New York City and began his residency
in Radiology in 1966 at St.Vincent's Hospital. In September
1967, he entered the United States Air Force and was stationed
at Beal Air Force Base, California, where he was head of
the radiology section. He remained in the Air Force until
September 1969, and then returned to New York City to complete
his residency at St. Vincent's Hospital and also New York
University Medical Center.
During his last year of residency, he was appointed chief
resident and after completing his boards in December of
1972 in therapeutic radiology, he remained at New York
University Medical Center as an instructor.
The following year, he moved to North Carolina where he
was an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina
in Chapel Hill. In 1976, he entered private practice in
Phoenix, Arizona. He served as departmental chairman during
his time in Phoenix, and was successful in achieving certification
of the department by the American College of Radiology.
After Dr. Bonanno's arrival in Fort Walton Beach, he developed
the practice of radiation oncology and participated as
medical advisor to the local chapter of the American Cancer
Society.
In 2002, he joined 21st Century Oncology as an independent
contractor and continues to serve the needs of cancer patients
in this area.
Dr. Bonanno is a member of the American College of Radiology,
the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology,
and the American Medical Association. He has also participated
in protocols during his residency program specifically
related to metastases to the brain and split-courses of
therapy for head and neck malignancy.
Dr.
Bonanno looks forward to continuing his association with
21st Century Oncology and providing care for the community
he has been serving over the last 15 years.
He is a member of the American College of Radiation
Oncology (ACRO).
