Dr. Brian Quaranta comes to 21st Century Oncology from Duke University Medical Center, where he was a member of the Medical School faculty.
He attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, and graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. Dr. Quaranta had been attracted to psychology because he found great satisfaction in helping distressed people, particularly the clinically depressed, and because he highly valued the therapeutic relationship between doctor and patient.
However, after much thought, he decided that his future should be in medicine, where he could combine personal care of patients and their needs with the use of fascinating technology and cut-ting-edge science. He was accepted to the New Jersey Medical School, and graduated in 1998. While there he discovered Radiation Oncology, career that perfectly blended his interest in utilizing the latest technology with the ability to spend time with and truly care for his patients.
He then headed to Duke University Medical Center, where he completed residency training in Radiation Oncology. There he was taught the use of modern techniques, but, more importantly, his mentors always emphasized that the goal of the physician is to treat the patient, not the disease.
Upon graduation he obtained board certification and was invited to join the faculty of the medical school. While at Duke he helped to create a multi-disciplinary prostate cancer clinic, was one of the first physicians in the department to use intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and created multiple research protocols. He has published journal articles and abstracts on multiple topics including prostate cancer, leukemia, and technical aspects of the treatment of lung and breast cancer. He has presented his data at nation-al and international scientific meetings.
Dr. Quaranta's family has long been involved in the care of patients; his father is a dentist and professor at the New Jersey Dental School (as was his grandfather before that), and his mother is a registered nurse. From observing them he learned, from youth, that it is the primary responsibility of every doctor to care for the "whole patient." That remains a guiding principle in his practice today.
Dr. Quaranta enjoys traveling, reading ancient history and philosophy, and formerly was active in a number of sports (and he vows to get back to it!).By far his happiest accomplishment is his marriage to his wife, Stacey, a native of North Carolina. She is pursuing a graduate degree in Health Care Administration.
He is a member of the American College of Radiation
Oncology (ACRO).
