Condition: Diarrhea

Diarrhea has many causes, including chemotherapy and radiation treatment as well as infections, reactions and food sensitivities.  When food and liquids pass too quickly through the bowel there is a loss of calories, water and nutrients, which may cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance including potassium and sodium electrolytes which may be lost.o

  • Notify your doctor or nurse if you are experiencing loose or watery stools.  An over-the-counter anti-diarrheal product such as Imodium-AD may be recommended.
  • Drink at least 8-10 cups of clear fluids a day.  Drink even if you are not thirsty.  Avoid caffeinated beverages;  instead, try water, sparkling water, seltzer, weak decaffeinated tea, clear soups or broths, popsicles, gelatin, Gatorade or sports beverage.  Juice may be diluted with water or club soda.
  • Eat plenty of foods and liquids that contain potassium such as bananas, baked or boiled potatoes or apricot nectar.
  • Eat small amounts of food and drink small amounts of liquid throughout the day rather than large meals.
  • Water-soluble fiber supplements (Metamucil or Citrucel) often help produce a firmer stool.
  • Avoid foods that are high in fiber, such as nuts, seeds, high bran cereals and popcorn, for instance.
  • Avoid carbonated beverages and chewing gum.
  • Milk products may lead to diarrhea, gas and cramps because of temporary intolerance to lactose.  It is best to avoid mild or milk products.
  • Spices that may contribute to diarrhea are curry, chili powder and hot pepper sauces.
  • Foods that are high in fat such as fried foods, or rich pastries may also contribute to diarrhea or loose stools.
Is the diarrhea persistent even after trying the previous tips?

If diarrhea is persistent, a clear liquid diet for 12-24 hours may be advised with the addition of the following foods: bananas, white rice, applesauce, cream of rice, mashed potatoes, yogurt with active cultures, decaffeinated tea, white toast, plain bagels, eggs, lean meat or poultry without added fat. It may be necessary to consider a fiber-restricted diet.
