Building
a Nutritous Diet
A
healthy balanced diet is important for your daily life. It
is especially important when being treated for cancer. A useful
tool for visualizing a nutritious diet is the food pyramid.
The food pyramid represents the foundation of your diet. Build
up from basic grains on to fruit, vegetables, dairy products,
and protein foods, with a minimum of sweets and fats to top
it off.

Includes:
Butter, margarine, mayonnaise, oils, salad dressing.
Recommendations:
Try to reduce your intake of these items and use them sparingly.
Includes:
Sugar, honey, syrup, candy, desserts.
Recommendations:
As with fats, try to reduce your intake of these items.
Includes:
Milk, cheese, yogurt, cocoa, beef, pork, tuna, chicken,
turkey.
Recommendations:
Only
two to three helpings of meats and dairy products should
be eaten each day.
Includes:
Berries, oranges, melons, apples, bananas, carrots, broccoli,
spinach, peas, corn, squash, tomatoes, beans.
Recommendations:
Each day 2 - 4 servings of fruits and 3 - 5 servings of
vegetables should be consumed. These items are quite important
for proper daily nutrition.
Includes:
Bread, muffins, cereal, rice, spaghetti, macaroni, crackers,
pretzels, wheat germ, grits, cream of wheat.
Recommendations:
Grains build the foundation of a healthy diet at the base
of the food pyramid. Try to consume 6 - 11 servings daily.
